On June 19, Jose Maria Figueroa-Navarro, 45, was arrested after officials found a 6-year-old bay gelding tied up in the sun on Thompson Road in Nipomo, according to the Sheriff's department.

Officials encourage county residents to properly care for their horses and if anyone witnesses abuse, call the authorities. The Sheriff’s Department Rural Crimes Unit has created a free brochure titled “Responsible Horse Care,” which is available by calling 781-4578.
