350 pigs freeze and starve to death
George, IA (US)

Incident Date: Tuesday, Jan 22, 2008
County: Lyon

Charges: Misdemeanor
Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Todd Steenhoven

Charges have been filed against a northwest Iowa man accused of letting 350 pigs starve and freeze to death last winter.

Todd Steenhoven, of George, is charged with one count each of animal neglect and failure to dispose of the pigs' bodies within 24 hours.

According to court documents, Lyon County officials received a complaint about the dead pigs in a building near Edna in May. Officials say the pigs had been dead since January.

A veterinarian determined the pigs died of starvation, neglect and hypothermia.

Steenhoven has a court appearance on July 8.
